Female photographers often turn the camera on themselves and see themselves as subjects, rather than objects. It gives them a sense of control. Women have often been used as objects, sexual and otherwise, to sell. Why not get control of that potential. Female photographers use their bodies to convey their own messages.
Nan Goldin examines people's most personal moments and presents them for examination and reflection. She is nakedly honest in her work, both regarding herself and others. Interested in the marginalized and those living on the fringe, her photography forces us rethink our own preconceptions as we see parts of ourselves in her characters.
