John Millei... Maritime

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

For the love of the sea, John Millei expresses his passion using paint to illustrate the turbulence of the waves, the meandering lines, the abstraction that is so enticing. He talks about his exhibit, "Martime," at ACE gallery. His abstraction of the water, the sea, its calm and hazards, surprises and excites the senses. He immerses the audience into the waves. Truly inspirational!

The struggle to live, to breathe, every moment represents the struggle of life. Adrian Kohler and Basil Jones demonstrate in Long Beach, California using a wooden puppet, the evolution of a puppet horse. They talk about life, art, love, passion, and the intermingling of all these things. All handmade, the big horse walks onto the stage, breathes, and interacts with the presenters and audience. Magical! It is a creation of love, art, and inspiration. Life.

Simplicity Pattern Company's head designer demonstrates fashion sketching. The focus is on the clothing. Every detail conveys something about the garment. With a few lines and color, the drawings of dresses come alive. She makes it look easy. With practice, we can learn to communicate clearly through illustration. It's another form of communication. Talk. Write. Draw.

The Winter Olympics 2010 celebrated its closing a few days ago in Vancouver, Canada. Designer Steven Heller of the New York Times reminds us that aside from the memorable events and athletes who have set new records and left their mark in history, well-designed pictograms of the Olympics through the ages, also deserve recognition. He traces the evolution of these deceptive simple pictograms and rates their success at communicating their message. He celebrates the olympians in design. Well done.

Snowlapse 2010.wmv

Winter is here and with it comes big snow storms and rainy weather. It could be freezing cold. This time-lapse video captures the beauty of the falling snow as it descends on a teddy bear sitting on a park bench and everything around it. Over time, the bear is completely enveloped by the snow, and the tree branches nearby drooped with its weight during the Feb. 5-6 snowfall in Washington D.C.. Without sound, all is calm and peaceful. Mesmerizingly beautiful.

One guy who was sick decided to play with cups. Using 600 clear plastic cups, he built a beautiful sculpture. He captured the process in video. Play could lead to the most artistic expression. Be creative. Have fun!

Mark Crilley demonstrates the way he breaks down the proportions of the female figure in his manga art. Illustrations could be magical in expressing emotions and thoughts, but behind most successful drawings are great technique. There is a systematic approach and layering on of details that contribute to the finished product. As we watched Crilley work, he brings to life a beautiful, other-worldly girl.

Dinosaur Ballet

Dancing to beautiful music, dinosaurs appear twirling, spinning, and jumping up in the air, showing off their best moves. In this animation reminiscent of an old film strip, a magical world of dancing dinosaurs captivates us. We are entertained by their expressive movements until a twist of events leaves us surprised and aghast at the end.

Parkour Motion Reel

In a flip-book style animation, parkour comes to life as someone reveals a drawing of a male figure navigating his way through an urban scape. He jumps over cars, climbs up and down walls, and jumps across buildings. The hand gestures of the person flipping the sheets of paper guide the movement of the male figure through space. Quite engaging and exciting. Wow!

Escalator Animation

It's quite calming for the mind to watch the animated stickers moving on the escalator. The purely functional escalator is transformed into something artistic. I look at it in a new way as the amorphous shapes changes, compelling and horrifying at the same time.
