Art :: Urban Aesthetic
We build our cities out of cement, concrete, steel and hard work. The man-made holds a unique aesthetic. The skyscraper, malls, freeways, roads, houses, playgrounds are all alive. We breathe life into them by inhabiting them, by using them. Yet they also have a life of their own. When abandoned, they rot and decay, just like anything other life forms. There's perhaps more beauty in their abandonment.
The Urban Aesthetic: Video Art of an Urban Landscape
Man-made structures have a beauty of their own. This video explores the urban landscape traveling from the center of San Francisco to the outskirts of West Oakland. Starting from a bart station, skyscrapers are contrasted with birds on the ground, people walking, waiting at the bus stop. Good editing. Interesting visuals.
Urban Curators
What is art? What is beauty? What is worthy of attention? RISD students calling themselves the Urban Curators goes out into urban Providence with museum style frames equipped with double-stick tape. They stick them on sides of buildings, holding up to each other, fences, and decayed, painted surfaces. By calling attention to the mundane, the overlooked, they elevate them to a high place. What is low art? What is high art? They deliberately blurred these distinctions.
