Art Videos
Feminism, as expressed through art and photography, can be extremely powerful and effective. One of the most important role of artists is to question existent paradigms of thought and behaviors. Watch the different approaches different artists have taken in their work. Inspire. Be inspired.
The Scritch-Scratch of Busy Little Hands
Art offers a creative outlet for many people. For one little boy who likes to draw, he escapes from his Catholic school into the world of girls with long legs and boobies through his art. His sketchbook comes alive in this really well-done animation.
Hot Dogs
Using white paper on a black blackground, this paper cut-out animation tells a story of a dog and his adventures, to the music and lyrics of a song. It is wonderfully done. The cast of characters includes a dog that screams, "Hot Dogs, Hot Dogs," a worm that inches along, a teapot that pours into a leaky cup, a hot dog that floats, and a bird that sits in a cup in the ocean. It's imaginative and surreal. It reminds me of Matisse's cut-outs and the naivete of children's art. That's it's charm.
Water Balloons Popping in Slow Motion
Water balloons popping in slow motion create beautiful art. Captured with a high speed camera, then slowed down to show the physics of impact. The explosions upon crashing are amazing, as the balloons distort, contort, and pop releasing their kinetic energy. Newton's Law of Conservation of Energy is nicely demonstrated in this video. Music is "Popcorn" by Crazy Frog. Let it pop!
To Dream
Great art starts with a great vision - one based on hope, anguish, despair or any other emotion. It succeeds when the work makes someone feel something, anything. Ilana Yahav through using the fluidity of sand illustrates her imagination and dream. In the process, we get a glimpse into her inner world.
Room
Watch a group of artists transform a room into their artistic vision. With Noiz-Davi providing artistic direction, and Daisuke Yamamoto and D.H. Rosen on 2D art, they collaborated on using a room as their canvas. Plants, trees and flowers grew on the walls and ceiling. It's quite wonderful to see. They brought nature inside. They help us see what they see.
What are they?
Two fish discuss what human beings are from inside their tank. From their perspective, we are their slaves, people who like to serve them. All they need to do is swim around. We make sure they are fed. Like any pets, they provide us joy and companionship and we keep them alive in return. It's difficult to say who is the slave of whom. Pets and humans coexist and all parties benefit from that relationship. This was Michelle Dent's third flash animation project. It raises an interesting question as to why we have pets and they mean to us and we to them.
I Wanna Be Famous
Jessica Delfino sings about how she wants to be famous. With no money and no job, she has nothing to lose. She outlines her path to fame as involving killing somebody important with a gun, a knife, and her mind. It's nicely animated by Nick Fox-Gieg.
Women In Art
Watch this video of moving female portraits in Western art history in the last 500 years. It's about how influence and lineage of art - that one piece of work informs another, one idea inspires another. See if you can identify the great artists who have created these portraits of beautiful women through the ages. The collection of paintings also speak to the way women have been seen through the ages by men, the changing standard of beauty and fashion.
The Proposal
In the style of silent films, similar to Charlie Chaplin, a man proposes to a woman as he presents her a ring at a park on a hot, sunny day. We see the characters expressions and black cards tells the story. This is quite a charming film, old charm, that is. The piano music creates the mood along with the sound of the reel.
The Color Blue
In 2057, the world is a very different place - a world without color, without, without music. In this conceptual and experimental piece, different people remember different sensations, colors, feelings, and relish in their memory with sadness. One woman recounts the oldest who remembers the color blue, the color of the sky, while she struggles to remember the sky. It's a piece about appreciation of what is. Someday everything we know might be gone. It's an amazing work.
